Even a year without a congress has substance:
We are pleased to announce the restart of our webinar program, an important pillar of the Academy’s mission. The upcoming series already had and will have well-known and highly respected speakers, covering a range of timely and relevant topics for our community. Looking ahead, we are planning introductory and foundational topics for colleagues at the beginning of their professional journey, as well as advanced and specialized sessions designed for experienced professionals seeking deeper insights and discussion.

In addition to academic-led sessions, we plan to strengthen collaboration with our industrial partners, enabling us to share first-hand insights, practical experiences, and emerging developments directly from industry.

This approach allows members to continuously develop their knowledge while staying connected to current challenges and innovations in the field.
This directly leads us to our main topic of this year: our congress. We are excited to announce our upcoming congress, 25th–27th of June, to be held in Iasi, Romania. This event will bring together colleagues from across the community for in-depth scientific exchange, discussion of current challenges, and networking in an inspiring international setting. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has curated a compelling scientific program, complemented by the opportunity to experience the renowned hospitality of our Romanian colleagues, making this conference both professionally enriching and personally memorable.

More details regarding the scientific program, speakers, and registration can be found on our website, www.eadmfr.eu. We strongly encourage members to save the date and take part in this key Academy event. We are excited to meet you there in person.
Maybe you have already realized our academy website is currently undergoing a comprehensive renewal. We will organize membership administration via our website to make it easier for all of us to stay connected. As part of this renewal, we are also introducing new sponsorship opportunities, allowing partners to support our mission while gaining appropriate visibility within the professional community.

The core aim of the academy remains the exchange of ideas, experiences, and challenges among colleagues.

Dear colleagues and friends,

As I look back on the year 2025, I do so with a deep sense of gratitude and pride for what our Academy has accomplished once again. The year began with a truly memorable and inspiring Junior Meeting in Porto. The event was perfectly organized, filled with energy in a sunny but cold city, and provided an excellent opportunity for junior members to exchange ideas, share research, and strengthen personal and professional connections. My sincere thanks go to Ana Paula Reis and her team for organizing this highly successful event.

After the lively start in Porto, the rest of the year may have seemed somewhat quieter from the outside. However, behind the scenes, the Board was working hard to support the Local Organizing Committee of the upcoming EADMFR Congress 2026 in Iași, Romania. The preparations are progressing, and we are confident that this next congress will again showcase the scientific strength, friendship, and collaborative spirit that define our Academy.
A significant part of our attention during 2025 was directed towards the financial sustainability of the Academy. We are grateful to our industrial partners and sponsors for their continued trust and generous support — their contributions remain crucial for our activities. Nevertheless, we are aware that building a stable and balanced financial foundation requires diversifying our income sources. Therefore, we are actively working on attracting new sponsors and reducing costs, ensuring that our academy remains financially sound and able to invest in future initiatives for our members.
Looking back on my term as Immediate Past President, I am filled with appreciation for the collaboration, dedication, and friendship I have experienced within the EADMFR community.

Our shared commitment to advancing DentoMaxilloFacial Radiology continues to inspire me. As this is my final report as Immediate Past President, I will soon step down from the Board during the next General Meeting, paving the way for the new President-Elect, as you will read in more detail in the report of the Nominating Committee.

It has been a privilege to serve this remarkable academy as a member of the Board and to contribute, in whatever small way, to its growth and continued vitality.

Report Nominating Committee

Dear colleagues, dear friends,

The Nominating Committee is pleased to present this short report to the members of the EADMFR. The committee is currently composed of Erwin Berkhout (Chair), Ingrid Różyło-Kalinowska, and Ralf Schulze.

According to the Constitution of the EADMFR, the Nominating Committee is responsible for preparing the slate of candidates for the future Directors of the Academy, namely the Vice-President/President-Elect, the Secretary and the Treasurer. The Committee identifies and proposes suitable candidates and submits its recommendations to the Executive Committee and Central Board in due time before the elections during the biennial congress.
For the upcoming term, the Nominating Committee hereby announces two vacancies in the Executive Committee:

• the position of President-Elect
• the position of Treasurer

In line with the Constitution, all members are invited to nominate fellow members of the Academy for these positions. Nominations should be made by EADMFR members in good standing and should include a brief motivation and confirmation that the proposed candidate is willing to serve. Further practical details on the nomination procedure can be obtained by sending an email to the chair of the committee (e.berkhout@acta.nl)

Dear friends and colleagues,

The last time EADMFR members met and got education was during the Junior meeting in Porto, Portugal, 2-5 February 2025, that was organized by the local team lead by Ana Paula Reis and her colleagues Filipa Barros dos Santos and Maria Saraiva, EADMFR’s junior committee and the EADMFR board. As a senior participant and lecturer, it is always rewarding to meet young, enthusiastic colleagues with interest in DMFR and to see them networked and learning. Many thanks to the organizers.

Now, one year later, we are looking forward to meet in Iasi, and we have had and will have the chance to meet during EADMFR’s webinars. A great opportunity to learn or just get an update on what’s up.

Now to the Education Committee’s work. I reported on the paper being prepared by the Education Committee in the previous issue of the newsletter. We have mapped the resources allocated to undergraduate education in oral radiology within Europe. The committee’s aim was to conduct a survey among dental schools in Europe, and to report on the results to encourage and support all colleagues in Europe to reach higher levels of undergraduate education in different areas of our field. The results reported in the paper that was generated, can be used to compare the resources allocated in different countries, when discussing local resources for oral radiology with leaders of dental schools.

In total, 118 dental schools from 29 countries within our EADMFR community was invited to participate, and not all but many of you may have replied to the online survey. Many thanks! The survey was conducted right before the pandemic, meaning that the results were not biased due to pandemic adaptations, e.g., online teaching and limitations in clinical work. After the survey was finalized and data had been analyzed, a paper was written by the members of the previous Education Committee. I wish to thank all the co-authors for the nice, constructive and fruitful collaboration that ended up with the present publication in the European Journal of Dental Education:

Dear friends and colleagues from the world of dental and maxillofacial radiology.

The upcoming EADMFR congress in Romania will undoubtedly be an opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss the new challenges we face. New areas of interest and challenges have emerged, especially those related to the broader implementation of MRI diagnostics, including in the assessment of hard tissues of the facial skeleton, and the integration of three-dimensional examinations obtained using optical scanning techniques with examinations obtained using X-ray methods. Therefore, the scope of our knowledge as radiology specialists is expanding and requires continuous training. Training is not achieved to the same extent across all European countries, and it is difficult to speak of the standardization of the knowledge we consider essential in our field of science. The members of this committee share the view that for European countries where, for various reasons, specialization from the DMFR does not exist, the introduction of legal and administrative solutions at the European Union level would be beneficial. This would open up the possibility of acceptance and/or recognition of qualifications by individual countries. Unfortunately, the path to this goal seems distant, and therefore, we will also seek other solutions, viewing the EADMFR as an advisory body.
The Specialization Committee would like to discuss the future model of postgraduate, doctoral, and specialized education with conference participants. During the upcoming congress, we would like your opinion. Therefore, conference participants can expect an online questionnaire addressing these issues. We want to hear your perspective.

Unfortunately, the past period has not been very successful for the RPSCC. At the Freiburg conference, we discussed several promising initiatives. However, due to very limited time on my part as chairperson—and apparently also for the committee members—these initiatives were not executed as official RPSCC projects.

One project was completed by an honors student at ACTA under the supervision of Erwin Berkhout and myself. This resulted in a publication:
Fakhtei, Shayan; Hoogeveen, Reinier; Berkhout, Erwin. Dose optimization in CBCT in dentistry: a survey among EADMFR members. Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, 2025.

Additionally, I hope to publish two more papers in the coming semester on the number, type, and dose of X-ray exposures used in orthodontic clinics in the Netherlands. I sincerely hope that the next chairperson will be more successful in activating the committee. There are numerous important topics that need attention. For example, CBCT as a primary diagnostic imaging technique instead of panoramic radiographs and cephalograms. Is lowering the CBCT dose by increasing voxel size sufficient to maintain orthodontic diagnostic quality?
Implementation of AI in dentistry: Does it truly help us in clinical practice?

The Research and Scientific Committee (RSC) currently consists of Spyros Damaskos, Jeroen van Dessel, Ibrahim Sevki and myself. Our main focus after the 2024 conference in Freiburg, Germany, was restructuring and rewriting the application guidelines for research awards, fellowships, and travel grants. During previous congresses, it had turned out that there was quite some confusion among applicants regarding which documents needed to be submitted for which category. Thus, the RSC, in collaboration with EADMFR officers, had decided to restructure these guidelines completely.

Well, what seemed an easy task at the beginning turned out to be rather complicated in the end. In several rounds of writing and revising, it took until October 2025 until the RSC was finally happy with the novel version, which is now published under https://eadmfr.eu/organization/guidelines/.

For the 2026 conference in Iasi, Romania, the RSC, as always, was involved in setting up the abstract submission system. It is important to note that this year, due to financial constraints EADMFR cannot offer EADMFR Research Fellowship Grant in Iasi, while Travel Grants and also the Research Award will of course be regularly offered.

The RSC members will review all abstracts submitted and also assign them as oral and poster presentations. Of course, priority will be given to the wishes of the authors, yet in case of a shortage of oral slots, finally, the quality of abstracts will determine the assignment.

As a novel feature, a webinar will be hosted on January 14th by the RSC entitled “Submit with Confidence: Abstract Writing for ECDMFR 2026.”
We are eagerly awaiting an exciting and also joyful conference in Iasi in June 2026, where we hope to see many of you again!

By the time you are reading this newsletter, 2026 has probably already kicked in with full force, but that does not hold me back to wish all of you an amazing year, with of course health, happiness…and plenty of great congresses!

We were spoiled last year with two major DMFR meetings organized by our sister academy IADMFR, one in London during summer-time and one in Venice later in fall. And what amazing conferences they were! Dr. Rose Ngu did a fantastic job in London, bridging DMFR with Head & Neck imaging, while Dr. Reinhilde Jacobs joined forces with the Digital Dentistry Society and brought us a glamorous James Bond-style congress in Venice. And what better place for me and our future congress host, Dr. Danisia Haba, to network and pick up ideas for the 20th ECDMFR which is soon to be held in Iasi, Romania, June 25th–27th.

Dr. Haba has been working hard over the last few months to bring you once again not only a conference with great scientific content but also the necessary networking events that promise to be very entertaining (for those of you who attended our previous congress hosted in Cluj-Napoca, you can surely remember the great things Romania has to offer). With the theme set as “Bridge between Dento-Maxillo-Facial and Head and Neck Imaging,” the local organizing committee surely will feed all your scientific minds from different directions, including multiple hands-on workshops to choose from during an exciting pre-congress day. The program is online on the website, so please take a look, but especially, register if you haven’t done so!
For those of you who still dream to do the same as Dr. Haba and all of our previous hosts, the bid for the 22nd ECDMFR in 2030 is still open. Together with my fellow committee members, we have thoroughly revised and updated the guidelines over the past years, so please take a look at those on the website and make sure to include the requested information in your congress bid book, as bids are judged and scored based on all these different documentations.

Dear colleagues,

following up on the wonderful scientific exchange from Freiburg (Germany), in February 2025 we organized the 9th Junior Meeting of our academy in Porto, Portugal. For the second time, it was Ana Paula Reis who led the local organizing committee during the three days of intense scientific activities and social exchange. During the event, 29 of our junior members, the external lecturers, junior committee and executive board members represented 18 different countries around the globe. As usual, it was a great opportunity to grow the EADMFR community, with the engagement of young and highly motivated members.

The program for the three days was filled with lectures, group tasks, and workshops within relevant topics in dentomaxillofacial radiology and scientific methods: evidence based radiology (EBR), ultrasound in head and neck including hands-on training, the temporomandibular joint, how to write a scientific paper, oral and pharyngeal function, radiation doses from DMFR, MRI in dentistry, and interactive image reading of cases.

Some attendants presented the DMFR specialist training programs in Europe, while some others presented their own scientific work. There were also group presentations of the results of the EBR-task. The main goal was to create a friendly atmosphere for those presentations, as for most of them it was their first time presenting their work to an international audience. Discussions were encouraged, and the participants eagerly joined high-level debates on the many discussed topics. As usual, one of the highlights of the event was the EBR-session, in which a set of pre-selected research papers was discussed in deep, mostly addressing the evidence level and the risks of bias in the assessed methodologies. This has been a great opportunity to make the participants reflect over their own research methodology and assisting them in the planning of their future scientific projects.

The success of the meeting is also directly linked to the commitment and hard work of the local organizing team, and Ana Paula, Filipa, and Maria made an excellent job in the preparations, allowing the event to take place in a successful and smooth manner. As expected, Porto was a fantastic venue to host this relevant event of the EADMFR.
A massive “thank you” goes to the contributing members of the Junior Committee, as well as to the lecturers Christina Lind and Michael Bornstein for their work and preparation for the event. As usual, we also had tremendous support from the EADMFR board of directors including Dorothea Dagassan-Berndt, Louise Hauge Matzen, Rose Ngu, and Dennis Rottke.

It is also relevant to thank AIM and Bernadeta Della Croce for the administrative support, as well as our sponsors and industrial partners, for the financial support.
We look forward to hosting a new group of junior members in the 10th Junior Meeting, in February 2026. More information on this exciting event will be available soon. The program will focus on key developments in Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology (DMFR), including the current role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the growing importance of MRI and ultrasound in modern diagnostic practice.

The congress will be hosted in Budapest, Hungary, a vibrant city in the heart of Europe, known for its rich history, excellent accessibility, and unique atmosphere.
