Basics of AI in DMFR
09:00–10:30
One glance at the scientific program of ECDMFR 2024 suffices to show the current interest in artificial intelligence (AI) in dentomaxillofacial radiology (DMFR). In this lecture, a basic introduction to AI will be provided, with a focus on deep learning. Then, the state of the art regarding AI research and applications in DMFR will be assessed; rather than trying to provide an exhaustive overview, the lecture will focus on specific challenges, limitations and pitfalls that may act as a bottleneck for AI performance or implementation. Finally, the main portion of the lecture will describe possible ways forward for AI in DMFR, in order to improve the performance, generalizability and applicability of AI-based tools.

PX & CBCT reading session
11:00–12:30
Many books on dental radiology procedures in dentistry suffer from one major shortcoming: they do not adequately describe how to evaluate a panoramic radiograph or CBCT in a structured, accident-free and safe manner. This was the reason we launched this workshop many years ago.
During the course, we focus on various topics that build on each other logically: First, we clarify the necessary technical basics and point out hardware and software that we consider to be of practical relevance. Then we will work with you to develop the structure and components of a report. We then go over the anatomical and pathological nomenclature with you and teach you the appropriate descriptive linguistics. For most of the workshop, however, we will evaluate panoramic radiographs and CBCT datasets and discuss possible working and differential diagnoses.

MRI in DentoMaxilloFacial radiology
13:30–15:00
This workshop is designed to introduce dental and dental-dedicated MRI to its participants. It will be a primer focusing on a fundamental review of MRI physics and applications curated from the existing literature, followed by an anatomical review comparing the appearance of anatomical landmarks in MRI to those seen in 2D and 3D X-ray-based imaging. The workshop will also include case presentations comparing intraoral, panoramic, and CBCT results to dental and dental-dedicated MRI, elucidating differences in resulting images.

How to write (and get published) a scientific paper in DMFR
15:30–17:00
The journal impact factor (JIF) of DMFR has held steady at 3.3 in 2023! This is particularly impressive at a time when most other journals within the medical field saw a significant decrease in their respective impact factor. In fact, DMFR has risen 14 spots in the radiology, nuclear medicine & medical imaging category (now 48th out of 135, compared with 62nd last year). It sits 30th out of 92 journals in the dentistry, oral surgery and medicine category and so is comfortably in the second quartile for both categories.
Thus, it should be the goal of all aspiring and established researchers in the field of DentoMaxilloFacial radiology to get published in DMFR.
But what kind of research is DMFR interested in? And how do you write a paper that has a high chance of getting accepted and published, even if the rejection rate of the journal is high? This lecture will present dos and don’ts of preparing, writing, and submitting your research with a special focus on DMFR.
