118: INTRAORAL ULTRASONOGRAPHY IN ASSESSING THE DEPTH OF INVASION OF T1 – T3 STAGE ORAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Aim: To determine accuracy of intraoral ultrasonography (IOUS) in assessing the depth of invasion (DOI) of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), as well as to compare it with the accuracy of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT).

Material and methods: Prospective study with time limitation of 9 months included 18 patients with a clinical diagnosis of an OSCC. All patients underwent IOUS and MDCT examination at the same institution. Histopathological (HP) analysis confirmed T1-T3 OSCC in all sublocations (3 – the buccal mucosa, 2 – the mouth floor, 2 – the dorsal tongue side, 5 – the ventral tongue side, 6 – the lateral tongue edge), and HP DOI measurements were correlated with those obtained by CT and IOUS. The analysis of the obtained data were performed using the statistical package SPSS 22 and Pearson correlation coefficient.

Results: Both techniques, IOUS and CT showed a significant and strong positive correlation of DOI measurements with analogue HP measurements (0.940 and 0.932, respectively, p<0.001). Although without a significant difference between the compared imaging modalities, we have to note that in 3 out of 18 patients, tumor lesion was obscured on MDCT due to artifacts originating from dental restorations.

Conclusion: IOUS showed high accuracy in assessing DOI of OSCC. In cases where metal dental restorations are a limiting factor for MDCT, IOUS has proven to be a competitive, easily applicable alternative modality in the evaluation of OSCC at accessible locations.

168: ULTRASONOGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT OF MASSETER AND TEMPORAL MUSCLE DIMENSION AND INTERNAL STRUCTURE IN YOUNG ADULT PATIENTS WITH BRUXISM: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

Objective: The goal of this study was to determine the dimension and internal echogenic pattern of masseter muscle (MM) and anterior temporal muscle (ATM) in patients with bruxism by ultrasonography (USG).

Materials and Methods: A total of 50 patients (19 males, 31 females) aged 20–28, including 25 patients with bruxism and 25 patients with nonbruxism, were included in the study.All subjects were evaluated with USG of MM and ATM.The dimension was measured at rest and during clenching and the internal echogenic pattern at rest was classified as type I, II and III.Internal echogenic pattern differences between bruxism and non-bruxism groups were evaluated using Chi-square test.

Results: In bruxism, the most common type 2 (78 %) internal echogenic pattern was found in MM and the most common type 1 (48 %) internal echogenic pattern was detected in ATM; in nonbruxism, the most common type 1 (58 %) internal echogenic pattern was observed in MM and the most common type 1 (80 %) internal echogenic pattern was determined in ATM.Whereas there was a statistically significant difference in internal echogenic pattern in the right MM and ATM in bruxism (p<0.05), no significant difference was observed on the left side (p>0.05).In MM and ATM on both sides, the dimensions of bruxism patients at rest and clenching were higher than those of nonbruxism patients, but this did not create a statistically significant difference (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Ultrasonographic examination of the internal echogenic pattern may be beneficial in understanding the nature of the bruxism process affecting masseter and anterior temporal muscle.
